Fitness Trends With Staying Power

If you’ve been following the health and fitness space long enough, you’ll realize that trends always come and go—and sometimes come back around… Are eggs good or bad for us now?! While I’m confident that many current trends have an expiration date on the horizon (start loosening your grip on your weighted vest), there are a few that I’m at least hopeful are here to stay.

The Importance of Muscle Mass

The more research that’s done on the health benefits of muscle, the more obvious it becomes that it’s a crucial piece of longevity, healthy aging, disease prevention, and more. Remember, the most effective way to build muscle is to strength train with challenging weights.

Cardio for Heart Health

Cardio crazes are always ebbing and flowing, but I think we’ve finally settled on a happy medium. While cardio is not the end-all-be-all for fat loss that it was once purported to be, it is absolutely crucial for keeping us heart-healthy, brain-healthy, and more. To keep it simple, elevating your heart rate several times per week is undeniably good for your health.

Protein & Fiber Focus

While we’ve gone a little crazy with the number of protein products on the market (absolutely no one needs protein popcorn), fiber products will likely be catching up soon. At least the trend is coming from the right place. The recent realization that most Americans aren’t getting anywhere near the recommended amounts of protein or fiber has launched a thousand ships trying to correct this issue. Just remember: natural sources of protein and fiber are always best, and more isn’t always better—you simply need enough of both, so don’t go too crazy.
