From Chocolate Bunnies to Healthy Smiles

Back to Articles

It may seem a little contradictory, but what better month to celebrate ‘Oral Health Month’ than in April after digging into the chocolate bunnies, right?! Once all of the Easter treats are consumed, it is important to take a look at the health of your teeth. Whether your child has fulfilled their sweet tooth this month or perhaps the adult in the house has finished off the candy stash, know that orthodontic care can really maximize not only the aesthetics of a smile, but the well-being of teeth for all ages. Below are some common questions Dr. Pappas receives related to caring for those chompers:

What is an Orthodontist?

An Orthodontist is a dental specialist who has attended dental school as well as an additional 2-3 years of training in the specialty of Orthodontics (for a total of about 10 years of education!) Orthodontists are able to straighten teeth, correct malalignment of the bite, and improve the overall function and aesthetics of your smile. Dr. Pappas attended The University of Virginia for 4 years for his undergraduate degree, Virginia Commonwealth University for 4 years of dental school, and an additional 2 years at The University of Iowa for his Master’s Degree in Orthodontics after serving in the Air Force as a General Dentist. Needless to say, his wife was so happy when he finally got a job!

How can orthodontics preserve the health of my teeth?

Orthodontic treatment creates not only a healthy smile but ensures proper function of the teeth. Teeth that are malaligned may be more difficult to clean and can cause abnormal wearing of tooth enamel. A bite that is properly aligned may also improve a patient’s ability to eat and chew. Finally, orthodontic treatment creates that coveted, aesthetic smile.

What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that kids first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven. Dr. Pappas offers free consultations to make sure your child’s dentition is ‘on track.’ However, if you are seeking to improve the look or function of your smile, any age is appropriate! Dr. Pappas provides treatment to children, teenagers, adults, and often entire families (because braces appointments are just more fun when you do it with a friend!)

If I have braces or clear aligners, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Definitely! It is actually even more crucial that patients receiving orthodontic treatment continue to visit their dentist regularly. When wearing braces or clear aligners, food may become more easily caught in your teeth. This could lead to cavities, gingivitis, or gum disease without continued care. Dr. Pappas works closely with your local dentist to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy while going through orthodontic treatment.
