Runny noses, itchy eyes, and dry coughs—oh hello, Springtime! We sure have missed you. As the seasons change, we have a choice: we can complain about the inconveniences, or we can choose to lean in and learn to adapt.
Spring is full of pollen, yes, but let’s turn our focus away from that tiny detail for a minute. I challenge you to open your eyes to the beautiful design of this special time of year. Over the winter, many seeds lie dormant in a process called “cold stratification.” It’s essentially hibernation; harsh winds cause these seeds to fall into a deep sleep, only to be awoken by specific external forces.
As the sun warms the earth and wildlife begins to scurry, these seeds are finally disturbed. Simultaneously, pollen is blown every which way, settling on the plants that need it for reproduction. Often, the immediate effects on our immune systems distract us from the beauty of what is happening beneath the surface. Then, just when you feel the pollen might take over, an unstoppable rain beats down, washing away the yellow haze and awakening those sleeping seeds.
New life springs forth from a very specific order: first as tiny “true leaves,” followed by buds, and finishing with a glorious flower. Some offer beauty and continued pollination, while others produce fruit. One nourishes the body, the other the soul—both are miraculous.
As a Holistic Nutritionist and family farmer, I want you to know how tightly we embrace these seasonal adjustments at The Station. We are dedicated to supplying the freshest, most seasonally beneficial products possible. You may have noticed our store has been rearranged into a “rotational offerings” model. Some of your favorites may have moved for now, but just like those dormant seeds, they will return when their time is right.
This spring, I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Take a break from your usual favorites and reach for something seasonally fitting. If you aren’t sure what to try, just ask one of our team members—we’ll be happy to guide you into the unknown.
