Harbor Heroes: The Monthly Donors Powering Harbor Humane’s Mission

Back to Articles

Every year, more than 4,000 animals arrive at Harbor Humane Society—strays found wandering unfamiliar streets, pets surrendered by families facing hardship and transfers coming from overcrowded facilities in need of support. Behind the scenes of every intake, every medical treatment and every successful adoption is a group of committed community members quietly making it all possible: our “Harbor Heroes.”

Harbor Heroes are monthly donors whose consistent, recurring support forms the financial backbone of the shelter’s day-to-day operations. Unlike one-time gifts, monthly contributions allow Harbor Humane to plan ahead—ensuring that nutritious food, clean water, medication, medical treatments, spay and neuter services and warm and comfortable housing are available for every animal that comes through the door, regardless of the season or the length of their stay. That kind of reliability doesn’t just benefit the animals—it allows shelter staff to focus fully on the care and connection that makes the difference between an animal merely waiting and an animal truly thriving…or even being adopted!

The relationship between people and their pets is one that’s difficult to put into words. Pets show up for us unconditionally—through the good seasons and the hard ones—and leave an impression on our hearts that lasts long after they’re gone. The Harbor Heroes program exists, in part, to honor that human+animal bond by ensuring more animals have the opportunity to find just that.

Here’s what two Harbor Heroes had to say:

“My husband, Scott, and I have always been animal people and had given to various animal charities over the years. When I started seeing the little collection bins at various stores around town looking for spare change to help animals in need, I thought, why am I just putting a dollar in the collection bin when I could do more? There are so many animals right in our community that need food, shelter and medical care. I contacted Harbor Humane to ask for a donation form and they responded, so genuinely thankful we wanted to help. Just like that, we were helping animals in need every month. When we were ready to adopt last spring, Harbor Humane is where we went! We adopted two kittens, now named Chase and Stella, and they have brought so much joy into our lives. We hope our monthly gift can help other little ones like Chase and Stella have a chance to be cared for and loved!” – Scott and Elizabeth

For the animals at Harbor Humane, every day in the shelter is a day spent waiting for a second chance. Because of our Harbor Heroes, it’s a day their support showed up—quietly, consistently and meaningfully.
