Kitten season is in full swing, and Harbor Humane Society has already welcomed many neonatal kittens into our care this year. While we are always grateful to help these fragile little lives, we also know that in many cases, kittens thrive best when they are able to remain with their mother.
If you find kittens outdoors, don’t panic! Mother cats will often leave their babies temporarily while searching for food, finding water or avoiding drawing predators back to the nest.
Before intervening, take a moment to assess the situation:
What to Check:
- Are the kittens warm, quiet and clean?
- Are they in a safe location?
- Have you observed from a distance for 4–6 hours?
- Is the mother returning periodically?
Kittens may need help if they are:
- Cold, wet or injured
- Crying constantly
- Sick or lethargic
- In immediate danger
- Alone for an extended period with no sign of the mom
In many situations, the best thing you can do for kittens is continue monitoring from a safe distance while their mom cares for them. Removing young kittens from their mother when it isn’t necessary can sometimes become a matter of life and death. Even with Harbor Humane’s resources and experienced foster families, some neonatal kittens simply cannot thrive without their mother’s care.
If you find kittens in need in Ottawa County, Harbor Humane’s team is here to help assess the situation and provide support. When kittens truly need intervention, our experienced foster families are ready to step in and provide the specialized care they need.
