Keep it Flowing, Not Flooding

Cahill’s proactive approach to sump pumps, sewer lines, and water damage prevention

Efficient freshwater flow to the kitchen, bath, and laundry is a convenience most homeowners take for granted. So are the systems that carry waste and groundwater away after the dishes are washed, the tub is drained, and the storm is over. Yet keeping pumps operating properly, and sewer lines free of blockages, requires regular maintenance.

That’s why routine plumbing checks are a preventive maintenance practice every home needs.

“Plumbing systems are out of sight, out of mind, so they’re easy for homeowners to neglect,” says Andy Visconi, director of plumbing and sewer services at Lake Bluff-based Cahill Heating, Cooling, Electric, Plumbing & Sewer. “But once- or twice-a-year inspections are the best way to prevent small issues from turning into major problems. Nobody ever wants to experience the catastrophic damage that can happen with basement flooding caused by a failed pump or blocked sewer line.”

Most homes rely on a sump pump to manage rain and groundwater; some also have an ejector pump to handle wastewater from below-grade fixtures. Because spring is peak flooding season—with snowmelt, ice thaw, and heavy rains increasing groundwater levels—early spring is an ideal time to ensure these pumps are working properly.

“When we come out for a pump check, we exercise the pump to verify proper operation, inspect valves, discharge piping, and pit conditions, remove accumulated debris that could block the impeller, and check and calibrate float or pressure switches to ensure activation at the correct water levels,” Visconi explains.

Because sump pumps discharge into the sewer system, Cahill also recommends a sewer video inspection during the same visit.

“Even with a perfectly functioning sump pump, water can back up into the home if the sewer line is restricted by a blockage,” Visconi says.

A camera inspection allows technicians to evaluate the interior condition of the sewer line and determine whether cleaning is needed. Once issues are identified, homeowners can enroll in a recurring preventive maintenance plan for both pump and sewer services—helping them avoid emergency calls during storms and heavy rain events.

Of course, even with regular maintenance, sewer blockages caused by hair, food waste, debris, and tree roots can occur at some point in a home’s life cycle. The good news is that modern plumbing technology offers effective removal methods that are gentler on pipes and keep lines clear longer than in the past.

Two of the most effective solutions are power rodding and hydro-jetting.

Power rodding uses flexible cables and specialized cutting heads to clear debris, tree roots, and blockages from the full diameter of the pipe. Unlike basic “snaking,” it is a powerful mechanical process designed for larger sewer lines. Hydro-jetting, on the other hand, uses high-pressure water streams to scour grease, sludge, scale, and sand buildup—materials that cutting tools cannot effectively remove. It is particularly useful for grease-related issues and sewer “bellies” where material tends to accumulate.

“Power rodding and hydro-jetting complement rather than replace each other,” Visconi explains. “Each applies to distinct problem types. With a sewer video inspection we can determine which method is right for each situation so we can thoroughly clean the entire pipe and restore proper flow.”

For additional peace of mind, Visconi also recommends installing a battery backup system for sump pumps. The backup automatically activates during power outages or mechanical failure, ensuring continued water removal during critical weather events.

Ultimately, Cahill’s plumbing maintenance services are designed to protect each home and the people living in it.

“We know that water damage and sewer backups are among the most destructive—and emotionally disruptive—events a homeowner can face,” Visconi says. “That’s why we focus on preventive solutions rather than reactionary ones. With more than 52 years in the business and locations on the North Shore and Western suburbs, we have the experience, advanced equipment, and skilled professionals needed to maintain and protect these critical home systems.”
