Tax Season Scams: What Wise County Needs to Know

Back to Articles

Tax season should feel productive, not stressful. But as filing deadlines approach, scammers go to work.

Right now, we’re seeing fraudsters impersonating tax software companies like TurboTax. These messages claim your return was rejected or that more information is needed to release your refund. The logos look real. The language sounds official. But the goal is simple: steal your Social Security number, banking details, or login credentials.

Here’s the truth: legitimate tax providers and the IRS will not call, text, or message you demanding immediate action or payment. They won’t threaten arrest, ask you to move money to a “safe” account, or request gift cards or wire transfers.

If you receive a notice about your tax return, don’t click the link. Go directly to the official IRS website by typing the address into your browser or call a verified customer service number.

A few smart steps can make all the difference:

  • Create an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This free six-digit code prevents someone from filing in your name.
  • File early. It reduces the chance of a criminal filing before you do.
  • Protect your digital habits. Avoid public Wi-Fi, use strong passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication.
  • Work with trusted professionals. Be cautious of anyone promising unusually large refunds or asking to route your refund through their account.

If something feels off — a rejected e-file you weren’t expecting or a missing refund — act quickly. Report concerns to the IRS and contact TexasBank so we can help secure your accounts.

At TexasBank, protecting your money is just as important as helping it grow. Fraud prevention isn’t complicated. It starts with slowing down, verifying first, and guarding your information carefully.

Decatur works hard for what it earns. Let’s make sure scammers don’t take advantage of it.
