Park City’s Gordo property will be the area’s next park-and-ride

By Kristine Weller

There’s a new park-and-ride lot coming to the Park City area near U.S. 40.

The Park City Council has selected its Gordo property on state Route 248 at Quinn’s Junction as the site of the lot.

Park-and-rides are seen as a way to reduce vehicle trips into the city and part of the city’s effort to become a “park once” community.

There is already a lot in Richardson Flat, but city staff say the 22-acre lot would shorten the commute. It also has enough space for amenities such as restrooms and a break room for drivers.

Designs for the lot will be included in the overall Re-create 248 Environmental Impact Study that begins in April.

Park City Museum is first in Utah to become Smithsonian affiliate

By Kristine Weller

The Park City Historical Society and Museum is now a Smithsonian Institute affiliate.

The museum is the first in Utah to earn the designation.

Executive Director Morgan Pierce said it will allow the museum to offer new perks.

He says it could open partnerships with other museums in the Smithsonian’s network to bring in exhibits and historical experts for lectures and borrow artifacts.

Pierce says, of the more than 15,000 museums in 49 states, just over 200 are affiliated with the Smithsonian.

Park City High receives state honor for English language learner programs

By Kristine Weller

The Utah State Board of Education has recognized Park City High School for its “exemplary” support of English language learners.

More than 95% of Park City high schoolers whose first language isn’t English are earning college credit through concurrent enrollment classes.

The classes are taught by Park City teachers using Weber State University or Utah Valley University curriculum and assessment tools.

The state board’s certificate honors Park City for having the highest percentage of English learners statewide enrolled in college-level classes.

Almost 41% of English learners at Park City are enrolled in another type of college-level class, called Advanced Placement AP. Colleges and universities nationwide allow students to skip introductory courses if they’ve passed specific AP exams.
