Understanding Plantar Fasciitis: Causes, Relief, and the Right Footwear

Heel pain is one of the most common complaints we hear in our store, and often the culprit is plantar fasciitis. This condition affects the plantar fascia — a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. When overstressed or irritated, it can cause sharp, stabbing pain, especially during the first steps in the morning or after long periods of standing.

Plantar fasciitis develops for a variety of reasons. Long hours on hard surfaces, inadequate arch support, worn-out shoes, sudden increases in activity, or tight calf muscles can all place excess strain on the plantar fascia. It’s especially common among people who work on their feet, runners, and those with flat feet or high arches. While the pain may start gradually, ignoring it often leads to prolonged discomfort and limited mobility.

One of the most important steps in managing plantar fasciitis is wearing the right footwear. Shoes with firm heel counters, proper arch support, and adequate cushioning help reduce stress on the plantar fascia and promote healing. In addition to proper footwear, daily stretching can make a significant difference. Stretching the calves and the bottom of the foot helps relieve tension and improves flexibility. Rolling the foot over a frozen water bottle or massage ball can reduce inflammation, while consistent rest allows the tissue time to heal.
