What To Look for In Replacement Windows
Michigan homeowners depend on weather-proof, sturdy windows year-round for comfort and indoor quality of life. Here are some tips and suggestions for comparing available options in materials and installation:
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
Replacement windows typically come with performance ratings such as U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and Energy Star Certification. The U-Factor, also known as thermal transmittance or insulating capacity, measures how well a window prevents heat loss and is a key indicator of energy efficiency. The lower the U-Factor the better the window insulates. Not surprisingly, single-pane windows have the highest U-Factor and double or triple-glazed windows the lowest. Frame materials also affect the U-Factor with non-metal frames generally more energy efficient than metal frames. Some windows can have a metallic layer of silver oxide that can reduce the U-Factor by up to 50%. U-Factors typically range from a low of 0.20 to a high of 1.20. In our area look for a U-Factor of 0.30 or lower.
SHGC is a measure of the amount of solar radiation admitted through a window. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat the window transmits and the greater its shading ability—meaning less heat transmitted into the home. Unlike the U-Factor, a higher SHGC value is useful in colder climates like ours, so we recommend windows with a SHGC in the range of 0.35-0.60, while a Florida home, e.g., would prefer an SHGC below 0.30.
Energy Star is an energy-efficiency program administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. USEPA has established efficiency specifications for over 75 different products and windows that meet the specs are eligible to display the Energy Star logo. Energy Star windows can save up to 12% per year on your heating and cooling bills. These windows are inspected, tested, and certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council—yes! There is such an organization! “Fenestration” means the arrangement, design and installation of any opening in a structure and comes from the Latin word for window. Now you know!
INSTALLATION MATTERS A LOT
An investment in high-efficiency windows could be wasted without proper installation. Professional installation ensures a proper fit, correct sealing, and long-term durability with less maintenance. Replacement windows are a great investment in your home’s comfort and energy and add value. If you choose the right product and installer you will enjoy a noticeable improvement in your indoor quality of life.
