As many of you know, I have been in practice since 1958, and my partner and son, Lee, has worked with me since 1984. That’s quite a few years in this profession, and over that time we’ve developed a simple approach to help clients think more clearly about their investments.
We often begin with a two-part question.
First, would you buy the same assets you own right now if you didn’t already own them? If the answer is no, that may tell you something important.
The second question is just as simple: Why do you own what you own?
If you can’t explain your investment strategy in simple terms, and in the time it takes for a short car ride, you may want to take a closer look at it. In fact, one of the best tests is whether you can explain your strategy to a 13-year-old. If you can do that, you’ve simplified it enough to understand what truly matters.
When your investment plan is that clear, the market noise and hype tend to fade away. What remains is a straightforward understanding of why your money is invested where it is and what you expect it to do over time. This point in the investment cycle can be a good time to step back and get a second opinion. As always, please let us know when we can be of help.
