Many parents are surprised to learn that the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by their first birthday. While it may seem early for a toddler with only a few teeth, these initial visits are less about treatment and more about establishing a “Dental Home,” a trusted place for preventive care and guidance as your child grows.
That first visit is designed to be simple, gentle, and informative. The goal is to help your child become comfortable in the dental setting while giving parents the tools they need for at-home care. We examine the teeth and gums, monitor oral development, review brushing and feeding habits, and answer questions about teething, thumb-sucking, pacifier use, and cavity prevention.
One thing people often incorrectly assume about pediatric dentistry is that “baby teeth don’t matter because they fall out anyway.” In reality, primary teeth serve as the essential blueprint for a child’s future smile. They hold space for permanent teeth and play an important role in proper speech development, chewing, and nutrition. Healthy baby teeth also help guide permanent teeth into their proper position.
Expert Health Tip: The “Lift the Lip” Technique
Between professional check-ups, I recommend parents practice the “Lift the Lip” technique once a month. Simply lift your child’s upper lip to look for any dull, white spots or lines on the teeth near the gum line. Catching these early signs of “chalkiness” can allow us to reverse potential cavities with simple fluoride treatments rather than fillings.
Starting dental visits at age one also gives us the opportunity to identify habits or concerns early, before they become bigger problems. Prevention is always easier, less invasive, and less costly than treatment.
Our goal at ABC Children’s Dentistry is to ensure that a child’s first experience with the dentist is rooted in curiosity and comfort rather than fear. By starting early, families can build a foundation of preventive care, helping children develop healthy habits and positive dental experiences that can last a lifetime.
