Designing for How a Space Is Lived In

Back to Articles

When clients begin thinking about their outdoor space, the conversation often starts with features—a pool, a patio, an area to entertain. But the most successful environments aren’t built around individual elements. They’re shaped around how the space will actually be used.

In this Lake Geneva project, the goal was to create a seamless extension of the home—one that supports both large gatherings and quiet, everyday moments. That required thinking beyond layout and focusing on flow.

The elevated pool became a central organizing element, not just visually, but functionally. By raising it slightly, we were able to define surrounding spaces more intentionally—separating areas for lounging, dining, and circulation without the need for barriers. This allows the space to feel open, while still giving each area a clear purpose.

Material selection played an equally important role. Clean architectural lines were balanced with natural textures and layered plantings to soften the overall composition. White hydrangeas were used strategically to introduce seasonal variation while maintaining a restrained palette that complements the home rather than competing with it.

One of the more impactful decisions was extending the landscape vertically. The green roof is not only a sustainable feature, but also a way to bring the landscape into view from inside the home and from multiple vantage points. It reinforces the idea that outdoor space shouldn’t be limited to ground level.

Ultimately, projects like this are less about adding features and more about creating continuity. When architecture, landscape, and use are considered together from the beginning, the result is a space that feels intuitive—one that doesn’t need to be thought about to be enjoyed.

That’s often the difference between a space that looks complete, and one that truly lives well over time.
