Trending: Specimen Plants
Today’s gardeners are designing their outdoor spaces with more intention than ever. You curate your gardens like you curate your interiors, choosing pieces that feel thoughtful, tactile, and lasting. Here are some popular varieties that live a long time with no maintenance:
“Fukuzumi” Japanese White Pine
The irregular, wind-swept form of this slow-growing pine adds character to any landscape. It develops multiple leaders that extend at 45-degree angles, with short, blue-green twisted needles and delightful little cones.
Firefly Oriental Spruce
True to its name, the bright yellow needles of “Firefly” light up your garden year-round. The thin yellow needles unfold in spring, contrasting beautifully with the green interior. Maturing at a compact 6X4 feet, it’s an ideal fit for urban landscapes.
“Pusch” Dwarf Norway Spruce
This charming dwarf variety produces loads of bright red cones on many short shoots in spring. The tiny cones brown as they age but hang on to decorate the irregular form year-round. It’s extremely hardy and matures at 2X3 feet.
Carston’s Wintergold Dwarf Mugho Pine
A beautiful, compact evergreen that lights up in a rich golden yellow when cold temperatures arrive. The golden-orange foliage reverts back to green in the summer. Grows slowly to 2X2 feet.
Deer Problems?
Maintaining an attractive property comes with challenges. One of them is those four-footed creatures with soft brown eyes, innocently nibbling everything in sight! What is more disappointing than waking up to discover that deer have destroyed a treasured shrub or a whole area?
Boxwoods to the Rescue
There are many trees and shrubs with a reputation for resisting deer, but how do we determine whether they’re really effective? Here is a simple test: crush a small piece of leaf or foliage from the plant in question and smell it. If it has any noticeable fragrance, deer will likely leave it alone.
One of our top deer-resistant choices is boxwoods. They come in many shapes and sizes, including pyramidal, rounded, topiaries, green, and variegated.
Other plants deer typically avoid include Caryopteris Bluebeard, Cat Mint, Russian Sage, Junipers, Gold Thread Cypress, Concolor Fir, Grow-Low Fragrant Sumac, and Ornamental Grasses.
We love helping you with any landscaping needs! To get our best advice when you visit the nursery, please bring along pictures of the area to be planted.
