How Are Removable Clear Aligners Used in Orthodontics?

Back to Articles

Removable clear aligners such as Invisalign are an orthodontic treatment modality that can be used in lieu of or in conjunction with traditional metal braces. Even though Invisalign is the most well-known system, there are other similar manufacturers available for providers.

Fabrication process:

Clear aligners use a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays that look like retainers that are designed to move teeth incrementally to desired position. Providers use a 3D scan or mold of the teeth and the bite to create the step-by-step treatment plan using specialized software.

The manufacturer uses the finalized treatment plan to fabricate the aligners to be delivered to patients.

Each aligner set is worn for a specific amount of time and is designed to create a small amount of movement by applying pressure to the teeth.

You’ll have periodic visits to ensure progress is on track and to receive new aligners.

Advantages

Some of the advantages of clear aligners are that they are less visible than traditional braces.  They are removable so there are no dietary restrictions. Brushing and flossing is easier. They are typically more comfortable than braces because the friction between braces and soft tissue is eliminated. There are also fewer emergency visits because there are no detached brackets or shifted wires that are seen with traditional braces.

Disadvantages

The most common issue with aligners is lack of compliance. Due to the prefabricated pre-planned nature of the aligner systems if one does not use the aligners consistently as prescribed and the prerequisite movement is not achieved then the subsequent aligner will not fit and new aligners may need to be fabricated.

Bottom line is clear aligners are a convenient, discreet way to straighten teeth using gradual, controlled movement. They rely heavily on patient discipline, but when used properly, they can be just as effective as braces for many cases.
