With summer fast approaching, there is no better time to pick up a good pair of sunglasses! Patients ask me all the time what makes a pair of sunglasses “good” when the cheap ones work just fine. The answer can be a bit complicated, but we are here to help walk you through it. The two main areas I look at when evaluating how well a pair of sunglasses will work: tint and polarization.

Another important factor to consider when selecting sunglasses is the material of the lenses and their durability. Lenses are made from a variety of materials, each with its own advantages. Polycarbonate lenses are lightweight and highly impact-resistant, making them a great choice for kids or anyone participating in sports or outdoor activities. Glass lenses tend to provide very clear optics, but they are heavier and more prone to breaking. Standard plastic lenses are often the most affordable option, though they can be more susceptible to scratches over time. Choosing the right material can help ensure your sunglasses match both your lifestyle and how you plan to use them.

The second most important aspect of sunglasses is the tint of the lenses. Most lenses can be tinted in just about any color you would want, but these are the most popular. Gray tint provides the most neutral look and the most effective tool to darken lights. Brown tint is a bit lighter and looks especially good with a gradient pattern, but does not darken your surroundings as much as gray. Green is also a popular choice, as it looks very similar to gray from a distance, but does not interfere as much with the eye’s natural perception of color. Of course there are more fun options as well and it is nice to experiment with different options!

The other main area of effectiveness is polarization. Polarized lenses act as a filter that limits what direction light can enter your eye. Polarization cuts glare dramatically and is a must for people who spend a lot of time outdoors fishing, golfing, or playing pickleball just to name a few activities. Now polarization is not for everyone as it can make LCD screens incredibly difficult to see. For this reason, surfing your phone can be a bit of a struggle, and it is not allowed for pilots as it will interfere with your ability to see your instruments!

It is also important to remember that children benefit greatly from wearing sunglasses. Kids’ eyes are more sensitive to UV exposure, and they tend to spend more time outdoors than adults. Starting good habits early and ensuring proper protection can make a meaningful difference in their long-term eye health.

Most importantly, always remember to purchase and enjoy what YOU like the most!
