Save or Splurge: Where to Invest in Your Remodel

Back to Articles

This is the age-old question of material selections: where to spend and where to scale back? A thoughtful approach to budgeting doesn’t mean choosing the cheapest option everywhere; it means understanding which elements impact the function, longevity and overall feel of your home.

Cabinetry: Mid-Range

Cabinets with solid construction, soft-close hardware, high-quality hinges and drawer slides, and durable finishes will perform better and last significantly longer than lower-quality alternatives. Look for at least 1/2″ plywood boxes and doors made of solid wood (for painted or stained cabinets) or high-quality thick MDF (for painted cabinets). Skip anything made from particle board, chipboard, thermofoil, hardboard, 1/4” MDF or plywood less than 1/2”. Semi-custom cabinets from reputable manufacturers are the sweet spot for quality and budget. Fully custom cabinets are expensive and usually not necessary unless you desire unique features.

Construction Team: Splurge

Investing in a licensed and fully qualified construction and design team that plans carefully, communicates clearly, executes with excellence and designs your space with intention ensures the results you envisioned on time and on budget. Mistakes are expensive. Having a strong team helps avoid errors and remodeling regrets. They won’t be the cheapest option, but your investment will be protected.

Lighting: Mid-Range

Lighting has the power to transform a space. Layered lighting, combining ambient, task and accent lighting, can elevate both the functionality and the atmosphere of a room. Under-cabinet lighting in a kitchen, statement fixtures above an island or dining table, and well-placed recessed lighting can dramatically improve how a space looks and feels. Skip light fixtures that feel like a safe choice, and go for some personality and unique features. You don’t need to excessively splurge to select amazing lighting, but you might regret boring box-store fixtures.

Tile: Save

Tile can be a place where homeowners find flexibility in their budget. High-quality tile starts as low as a few dollars per square foot, so there’s no reason to compromise quality for price. The key is knowing which tile to buy! Straight grout lines and tiles that lay flat during installation result from shopping with reputable brands and using a great installer. Skip the big box store purchases here and lean on your designer for great tile that won’t break the bank.

Plumbing Fixtures: Mid-Range

Faucets and plumbing fixtures may seem like minor elements, but they contribute significantly to the overall look and function of a space. Homeowners can achieve a high-end look without choosing the most expensive products on the market. Look for products with brass or ceramic internal parts for long-lasting performance and a full-metal body for durability. The standard big box store $199 faucets are likely to need frequent replacement. For a little more, you can get years of leak-free use and a beautiful finish. Rely on your design and construction team for recommendations.

A successful renovation isn’t about spending the most—it’s about spending wisely. By prioritizing craftsmanship, quality materials where they matter most and thoughtful design choices, homeowners can create spaces that are both beautiful and built to last.
