Last October, I left Wrightsville Beach with a suitcase full of linen and intention—and arrived in Corfu, Greece, feeling both completely certain and slightly lost.
Which, as it turns out, was the perfect place to begin.
I had traveled there to study Maya Abdominal Massage under Dr. Rosita Arvigo for her final master-level training—the “Plus Class.” It was a closing chapter of sorts that brought together 35 women from 11 countries at Villa Kefalmandouko, surrounded by olive, pomegranate, citrus trees and the most beautiful view of turquoise waters.
But before any of that, I got lost. On an island. A small one.
The first day, trying to find the villa, I drove in circles, second-guessing every turn, wondering what I was doing all the way out there, and of course right when I wanted to give up and head to the beach, I found it. You get a little lost first. And then you arrive exactly where you’re meant to be.
The Space Between Learning and Living
The villa felt like something out of a memory—soft light, long tables, open air. Meals that didn’t rush you. Conversations that didn’t need filling.
And then there was the cat.
Not sure if anyone one owned it, and yet it belonged completely. It wandered in and out of class as it pleased—curling up near the treatment tables, weaving between us as we practiced, disappearing just as quietly as it arrived. It became part of the rhythm.
Nothing felt forced. Not the setting. Not the pace. Not even the learning.
Held by Teachers, Not Just Taught
And then there was Rosita.
Dr. Rosita Arvigo carries decades of knowledge, much of it shaped by her time spent learning with Don Elijio Panti in the jungles of Belize. This work—abdominal therapy rooted in traditional healing—has been carefully preserved and passed forward through her.
But what made this experience exceptional wasn’t just her presence but the team around her. We had one teacher for every four students. That level of support meant every detail was guided in real time – every nuance of touch refined; every question met with clarity. You weren’t left guessing. You were held in the learning. Because this work is not something you rush. Not something you dilute. Not something you learn at the surface. It is practiced. Felt. Understood over time.
An Undiluted Lineage
Through organizations like the Abdominal Therapy Collective, this work continues to be upheld with integrity, honoring its roots while integrating modern understanding. At its core is a simple but often overlooked truth: The abdomen is central. It is a meeting place for:
- Nervous system communication
- Lymphatic flow
- Arterial and venous circulation
- Blood carrying oxygen and hormones
- Digestive and reproductive function
Abdominal therapy works gently with these systems, encouraging natural flow and supporting the body’s ability to return to balance.
More Than the Abdomen
This work also includes the intricate bones, ligaments and tendons, where the body often holds the imprint of past experiences: falls, strain and long-standing patterns.
Over time, adhesions and restrictions can develop, influencing comfort and mobility. By working with this area as part of the whole, the body is supported in finding greater ease and alignment, not through force, but through gentle guidance.
For Every Body
While often associated with fertility or pregnancy, this work is not limited to one phase of life. It may support:
- Digestive discomfort such as bloating
- Hormonal balance through improved circulation
- Pelvic and lower back tension
- Stress held in the abdominal region
- Postural strain and physical fatigue
It is just as valuable as a preventative practice, supporting flow, awareness, and connection within the body.
Why I Went
I didn’t travel to Corfu to add something trendy to a menu. I went because I believe that if you’re going to offer something—especially something this nuanced—you should learn it as it was meant to be learned. Directly. Respectfully. Without shortcuts.
Because sometimes you have to step outside of your everyday world – get a little lost, trust the process – to come back with something deeper. And more often than not, you realize you’ve arrived exactly where you were meant to be.
A Simple Belly Tonic

Steep and sip slowly. A simple ritual to support digestion and gentle circulation.
