Hello again, everyone … Happy Spring!
As I mentioned in my previous article, since cash flow is such a critical business tool to understand and utilize strategically, I’d like to delve deeper into this concept today. Cash flow is the financial reality check every business owner needs, because at the end of the day, your business doesn’t run on revenue – it runs on cash.
A quick review: At its core, cash flow is simple: cash in vs. cash out. If more cash is coming in than going out, your cash flow is positive, and you are building a nice nest egg (for your personal needs, for reinvestment in your business, etc.). If more cash is going out than coming in, you’re spending cash and have negative cash flow.
Cash Flow gives you a more transparent financial picture than any other financial tool you could use for running your business. WHY? Because your profit & loss statement is a story about performance, while your cash flow statement shows you the reality of your situation. Remember, your P&L shows profitability while your cash flow shows survivability. Cash flow answers questions like:
- Can I make payroll this month?
- Do I have enough financial cushion if revenue dips?
- Am I generating usable cash, or is the profit on the P&L statement my only guide?
- How do I align my business strategy to ensure positive growth in cash flow?
You need to ask yourselves these questions to continue to keep your company profitable and growing. When you understand your cash flow, you gain clarity on:
- Collection speed – how fast customers pay you.
- Spending patterns – where cash is going, for what, and when.
- Cash gaps – periods where outflows exceed inflows.
- Operational efficiency – are you using your cash wisely?
When you understand your cash flow in this way, answers to your questions are much clearer, more strategic and more powerful. They become more grounded and you move from using your gut instinct in managing the business, to running your business with a clear vision based on facts. When you have the clarity around your cash flow, you’re no longer reacting to your business … you’re leading it.
Three key takeaways:
- Revenue tells you how big your business is.
- Profit tells you how efficient it is.
- Cash flow tells you if your financial strategies are actually working.
