As we move into May here in Northern Kentucky, your lawn is entering one of the most important growth periods of the year. What you do right now will directly impact how your property looks—and performs—through the heat of summer.
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that lawn care is reactive. In reality, it’s proactive. Most of the lawn issues we’re called to fix in July and August actually begin in May.
So, where should you focus your attention?
Start with Proper Mowing
Your first few mows of the season matter more than you think. Cutting your grass too short—often called “scalping”—can weaken your lawn and create the perfect environment for weeds to take over. A slightly taller mowing height helps shade the soil, retain moisture, and promote stronger root growth.
After 27 years in the green industry, we’ve found that a mowing height of 3–3.5 inches is ideal for our region.
Just as important is keeping your mower blades sharp. Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which puts unnecessary stress on your lawn and can lead to browning. Sharpening once or twice a year typically isn’t enough.
Changing your mowing pattern regularly also promotes healthier growth.
Don’t Skip Fertilization
May is a key time to feed your lawn. Proper fertilization strengthens the root system and prepares your turf to handle rising temperatures. Without the right nutrients, even the best-looking spring lawns can struggle as summer sets in.
It’s not just about applying fertilizer—it’s about applying the right product at the right time.
Water the Right Way
Watering is one of the most misunderstood parts of lawn care. Many homeowners water a little bit every day, thinking they’re helping—but this actually creates shallow roots and a weaker lawn.
Instead, aim for deep, infrequent watering. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making your lawn more resilient during hot, dry periods. Early morning is the best time to water.
Address Weeds Early
If you’re seeing weeds now, act quickly. Weeds multiply rapidly as temperatures rise, and what starts small in May can become overwhelming by early summer.
Early intervention is always more effective—and more cost-efficient.
Don’t Overlook Your Landscape Beds
Your landscape beds play a critical role in your property’s overall appearance and health.
One of the most common mistakes we see is mulch being installed without proper preparation. If weeds are not removed and beds are not edged first, those weeds will grow right back through—often worse than before.
The Big Picture
Your property functions as a system. When one part is overlooked, it impacts everything else.
At the Décor Group of NKY, we see the best results when lawn care, bed maintenance, and property management are approached as one cohesive plan—not separate tasks.
A healthy property isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about doing the right things at the right time—starting now.
