Congratulations! Reaching your 65th birthday is an exciting milestone, and in our area of the Hudson Valley, it’s also a time for new adventures and choices. Among those choices, one of the most important is understanding your Medicare options — because nothing should slow you down from making the most of what our beautiful region has to offer! Whether you’re planning to spend more time with family, volunteer, or join that walking group at your park, choosing the right health coverage for your needs lets you focus on what’s important to you.

Navigating Medicare might seem overwhelming, but you’re not alone. As your neighbor, I’ve put together this easy guide to help you take the next steps with confidence and peace of mind. Let’s dive in!

Coverage Options

Medicare is divided into four Parts: A, B, C, and D.

Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals and other medical facilities, while Part B covers medical services and supplies like doctor visits and preventative care. Part C, or Medicare Advantage, combines Parts A, B, and usually D, and often includes extra benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing. Part D helps cover prescription drug costs. Private insurance companies provide Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans, and Part D drug plans. Each part comes with different costs, including monthly premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copays.

Enrollment Periods

Medicare enrollment is limited to specific times of the year, and it is crucial to enroll during the seven months that surround your 65th birthday. This ensures you can access the benefits when you need them. Failure to do so can result in late enrollment penalties. If you’re working past 65, you may qualify for special enrollment periods.

Working Past 65?

If you’re still clocking in or enjoying health coverage through your spouse’s employer, take time to review your choices. You may want to keep your employer’s plan, or you might be better off switching to Medicare. If you have employer coverage, check that it’s “creditable” to avoid late enrollment penalties. Planning ahead is key to ensuring you have the right coverage when you need it.

Late Enrollment Penalties

If you miss your initial or special enrollment period, you may face penalties in the form of higher premiums for Part B and potentially Part D coverage as well. It is essential to stay informed about enrollment deadlines to avoid these penalties.

Medicare Supplement Plans

To keep surprises to a minimum, supplement plans (offered by private carriers) can help cover those pesky gaps original Medicare leaves behind. Yes, there’s an extra premium, but it means more predictable costs — making it easier to budget for travel, hobbies, or those dinners on the Rondout.

In- and Out-of-Network Providers

As mentioned earlier, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, also known as Part C, are provided by private health insurance companies. These companies have networks of hospitals, doctors, and healthcare providers that have agreements with the plan. If you’re enrolled in an MA plan, you may be restricted to using providers within this network. Using providers outside the network, except in emergencies, may result in higher out-of-pocket expenses or denial of services.

Receiving Medicare through Social Security

If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, good news: you’ll be signed up automatically for Medicare Parts A and B when you turn 65. Premiums are usually deducted right from your benefits. If you’re on the “wait and see” plan and haven’t filed for Social Security yet, just head to the Social Security Administration’s website, ssa.gov, to enroll in Medicare when the time comes.

Understanding the Basics of Medicare Enrollment

Knowing the ins and outs of Parts A, B, C, and D sets you up for success — and helps make sure you’re covered for all the good times ahead. Staying informed and organized prevents missed deadlines and keeps your health (and budget) on track.
