Are You Ready for Hurricane Season?

  • Copied!

Hurricane preparation isn’t just boarding windows—it’s mostly about getting your insurance structure right before a storm exists. Once a storm is named, insurers often freeze changes.

1) Understand what you actually have (most people don’t).

There is no single “hurricane insurance” policy—coverage is split across different policies and add-ons.

You should confirm:

  • Homeowners insurance → usually covers wind (sometimes with restrictions)
  • Windstorm policy or endorsement → required in some coastal zones
  • Flood insurance → NOT included in homeowner’s policies

Biggest mistake: assuming “I’m covered for hurricanes.” You’re only covered if each type of damage is covered separately.

2) Get flood insurance early (this is critical in Texas).

  • Standard policies do not cover flooding or storm surge
  • Most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period

Translation: If a storm is on the radar, it’s already too late.

3) Review your hurricane/wind deductible. This catches many people off guard.

  • Hurricane deductibles are often 2%–5% of your home value
  • On a $400K home → that’s $8,000–$20,000 out of pocket

You want to know:

  • Exact percentage
  • When it applies (named storm vs regular wind)

4) Check for coverage gaps & add-ons.

These are the most commonly missed.

Must-consider add-ons:

  • Sewer/water backup coverage
  • Ordinance or law coverage (brings home up to current code)
  • Additional living expenses (hotel, food if displaced)
  • Replacement cost vs actual cash value

If you skip these, you can be “insured” and still lose money.

5) Document everything BEFORE the storm.

This is one of the highest ROI steps you can take.

Do this now:

  • Walk your home and video every room
  • Capture:
    • Furniture
    • Electronics
    • Serial numbers
  • Save copies in the cloud/email

Claims get paid faster—and more fully—when documentation exists.

6) Build a clean claim file system.

After a storm, chaos kills claims.

Prepare:

  • Digital folder with:
    • Policy documents
    • Agent contact
    • Photos/videos
  • Know how to:
    • File a claim quickly
    • Track receipts for reimbursement

7) Understand timing restrictions (huge).

  • Insurers stop issuing or modifying policies when storms approach
  • You cannot increase coverage last minute

Think of insurance like a parachute—you can’t pack it while falling.

8) Make sure your home condition won’t void claims.

Insurance can deny claims for neglect.

Check:

  • Roof condition
  • Trees near home
  • Existing damage

If something was already broken, they may not pay.

9) Don’t forget your car and business (if applicable).

  • Auto: need comprehensive coverage for flood/wind damage
  • Business owners:
    • Business interruption coverage
    • Inventory documentation

10) Know what to do immediately AFTER a storm

Preparation includes knowing the claim process:

  • Take photos before any repairs
  • Make temporary repairs only
  • Keep receipts
  • Don’t throw damaged items away yet.
