Asthma and Allergies: What You Should Know

At Asthma & Allergy Physicians (AAP), we are excited to begin contributing a regular expert column focused on helping individuals and families better understand and manage allergic and immunologic conditions. Our goal is simple: to share clear, practical, and reliable information so people can feel more confident in their health and the decisions they’re making. While this is not a substitute for medical advice or office visits, we hope it will give you some practical ideas for handling your asthma and allergy concerns.

Allergic and immune related conditions are incredibly common and often misunderstood. From seasonal allergies and asthma to food allergies, eczema, chronic hives, and immune system disorders, these conditions can have a real impact on daily life. They affect sleep, school and work performance, and overall well being. Many of the patients we see have spent years searching for answers, trying different treatments, and wondering if what they are experiencing is “just something they have to live with.”

At AAP, we don’t think it should be that way.

Our team of expert allergists and nurse practitioners has been caring for patients in this community for over 50 years. We take a very individualized approach to care, because no two patients and no two immune systems are exactly the same. Each patient deserves personalized precision care. Whether we are helping a child safely navigate a food allergy, managing difficult to control asthma, treating chronic sinus or allergy symptoms, helping to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms, or evaluating more complex immune concerns, our focus is always on building thoughtful, realistic treatment plans that actually work for our patients.

This column aims to extend that care beyond the walls of our offices. In the months ahead, we’ll be covering topics like:

  • How to tell if your allergies or asthma are truly well controlled
  • When allergy testing is helpful and when it may not be
  • Treatment options, including allergy shots, advanced therapies and food desensitization
  • Managing eczema and chronic hives
  • Understanding food allergies and how to approach them safely
  • Simple ways to reduce environmental triggers at home and at work
  • When to consider evaluation for frequent infections or possible mast cell conditions
  • How changes in our environment may be contributing to worsening allergy symptoms

We also want to spend time explaining the “why” behind what we do. Healthcare can feel confusing, particularly when you are hearing different things from different sources, especially with social media. Our hope is that by breaking things down in a straightforward way, patients feel more informed and more in control of their own care.

It’s also an exciting time in allergy and immunology. We’re seeing meaningful advances in treatment options and more personalized approaches to care than ever. As a practice, we are committed to staying current and bringing those options to our patients when appropriate.

Most importantly, we want this column to be useful. If it helps answer a question, gives you a better understanding of your symptoms, or helps you decide when to seek care, then we are doing our job!

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with you and look forward to sharing more in the months ahead.
