Beat the Heat: Three Ways to Keep Your Home Comfortable This Summer

North Georgia summers are no joke. By June, the heat is already settling in, and many homes start showing their weak spots. Hot rooms, rising power bills, and doors or windows that no longer seal properly can all make your home feel less comfortable.

The good news is you do not need a full remodel to feel a difference. A few targeted updates can help make your home cooler, quieter, and easier on your energy bill before the hottest part of summer arrives.

Vinyl Windows

Old windows are one of the biggest reasons homes heat up in the summer. Single-pane glass and worn seals allow heat to come in while cool air escapes. This is especially noticeable in rooms that get strong afternoon sun.

Vinyl windows are a great option for our climate because they resist warping, do not need painting, and often include double-pane glass to help keep indoor temperatures steady. Many homeowners notice the difference quickly in both comfort and energy use. If you are considering new windows, keep in mind that custom sizes can take several weeks to arrive, so it is best to order early.

Exterior Doors

A worn front or back door can let in heat, humidity, and outside noise. If you feel warm air around the frame or see daylight near the bottom, the seal may be failing.

Fiberglass doors are a strong choice for North Georgia homes. They handle humidity well, require little upkeep, and come in styles that look like real wood. Wood doors are also a beautiful option and offer a classic look and feel. However, wood doors should be placed under a covered porch or overhang and should not have a storm door over them, as direct sun and trapped heat can damage the finish.

Weather Sealing

Sometimes the doors and windows themselves are fine, but the seals around them are not. Weatherstripping wears out, caulk cracks, and thresholds can settle over time.

Replacing worn seals is a small project with a real payoff. It helps keep hot air out, cool air in, and your home more comfortable overall.
