One of the most common conversations we have with clients is also one of the most important: understanding how dentures compare to natural teeth.
Dentures can be life-changing. They restore your smile, support your facial appearance, and allow you to eat and speak more comfortably again. But they are still a replacement—and with that comes some natural differences.
Unlike natural teeth, dentures are removable. They rest on the gums rather than being anchored by roots, which means they rely on fit, muscle control, and in some cases, suction for stability. Because of this, they can feel bulkier at first, and there is always an adjustment period as your mouth adapts.
Chewing is often one of the biggest changes. While many foods can still be enjoyed, dentures do not provide the same biting force as natural teeth. Some clients find they need to modify how they eat—cutting food smaller, chewing more slowly, and avoiding very hard or sticky items.
Speech can also feel different in the beginning. This is completely normal and usually improves with practice as your tongue and muscles learn to work with the new shape of the denture.
Lower dentures, in particular, are usually more challenging. Unlike upper dentures, which can achieve suction against the roof of the mouth, lower dentures have less natural retention. This is a normal limitation, and one we always discuss openly so clients know what to expect.
Over time, the mouth continues to change. After teeth are removed, the jawbone naturally shrinks—a process called bone resorption. This can affect how dentures fit, which is why ongoing care, including relines, is an important part of maintaining comfort and function.
For some clients, dental implants can provide added stability, especially for lower dentures. These options are not for everyone, but they can make a meaningful difference in the right situation.
At our clinic, we believe that clear, honest conversations lead to the best outcomes. When clients understand both the benefits and the limitations of dentures, they are better prepared, more confident, and ultimately more satisfied with their results. Every smile we create is carefully crafted in our on-site lab, allowing us to focus on fit, function, and natural appearance at every step.
If you’re considering dentures, or simply want to better understand your options, we’re here to guide you through the process—thoughtfully, transparently, and at your pace.
