As we move into the warmer months here in Jackson County, front porches come alive, flags are proudly displayed, and neighborhoods begin to buzz with gatherings, gratitude, and remembrance. As both a Realtor and a member of this community, I have the privilege of helping people find not just houses, but homes, places where traditions are built and honored.

One of the most meaningful traditions we just observed is Memorial Day. While many associate Memorial Day with the unofficial start of summer, its true meaning runs much deeper. It is a day set aside to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a time for reflection, respect, and remembrance. A time to take a moment to pause and recognize the cost of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

A powerful symbol of that freedom is the American flag. Displaying the flag is a beautiful way to show patriotism, but it also comes with a responsibility to do so respectfully. Proper flag etiquette helps preserve the dignity of what the flag represents.

When flying the flag at home, it should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, unless properly illuminated at night. On holidays such as Memorial Day, the flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon to honor fallen service members, then raised to full-staff, flown at the peak of the flagpole, for the remainder of the day as a symbol of the nation’s resilience.

If you’re hanging your flag from a staff mounted to your home, it should be angled upward and never touch the ground. When displayed vertically against a wall, the union (the blue field with stars) should always be positioned to the observer’s left. These small but meaningful details reflect a larger respect for our country and those who have served it.

As you prepare your home for the summer season, whether you’re hosting friends, planting flowers, or simply enjoying your space, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what our patriotic holidays represent. Please remember, it’s more than a long weekend or family BBQ, it’s a reminder of sacrifice, service, and unity.

Organizations like the American Legion, which I am proudly a member of, continue to play a vital role in keeping the spirit of Memorial Day alive through ceremonies, community events, and support for veterans and their families. Participating, volunteering, or supporting these efforts is another meaningful way to honor the day.

In real estate, we often talk about the importance of “home.” Home is more than four walls, it’s a place where values are lived out and traditions are passed down. This month is flag day, maybe it is time to start a new flag tradition if you don’t already proudly fly our stripes and stars. Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day, may your home be filled not only with celebration, but with gratitude and remembrance.
