Our law office presently consists of 14 women. Although we firmly believe in our abilities to do almost anything, we occasionally encounter situations when it would be helpful to have the assistance from a man. One of those situations occurred in front of our building last month.
Due to the proximity of our building to the intersection of East David and Marshall Road, we see a lot of eventful actions occur on the two roads, whether it be a car accident, road rage, or even someone picketing for a cause.
Last month, we saw something that we hadn’t yet witnessed: A car broke down in front of our building. Standing next to the car was a teenager looking very distressed about the situation at hand. From our office windows, we watched the young driver become visibly distraught in the middle of the road while cars zoomed past him and his unmoving car. After witnessing the panic displayed from this teenager for 10 minutes, two of our lawyers, one wearing a suit, and a paralegal decided to go outside and jump into action to assist the young man.

With the ladies’ assistance, the young man got behind the wheel to steer the car, and the three ladies pushed the car out of the busy traffic through the intersection of East David Road and Marshall Road. The closest location to safely steer the car was the parking lot next door to our building at 1201 East David Road. As the ladies pushed the car through the intersection, and down Marshall Road, a driver in a car yelled out their window, “Girl power!”
Soon after the young man was able to safely park his car, his mother arrived and was very grateful to the ladies for coming to her son’s rescue. The mother explained that her son had special needs and so that is why he was visibly panicking and unsure about what to do when his car broke down.
Our law practice focuses on estate planning, probate, and elder law, so we are trained to assist people who are distressed due to a terminal illness, dementia, or death. However, we never imagined that our experience with helping people who are troubled would extend to a teenager and a disabled car. It just goes to show that everybody can lend a helping hand, whether you are a woman or a man, or a lawyer in a suit.
