Hi Deer Creek neighbors! I’m Serena Campbell, Senior Business Development Representative at Communication Federal Credit Union. As someone who often meets with new families joining our credit union, and as the mother of an older teenager, the topic of when a child should be trusted to handle a debit card is a very familiar one to me. I hope the advice below gives you a good base on which to make such a decision.

Between school activities, sports practices, and spending time with friends, our kids are learning independence earlier than ever. With that independence often comes money… whether it’s an allowance, birthday cash, or earnings from chores or a first job. That’s why many Deer Creek parents find themselves asking the same question: Is my child ready for a debit card and a checking account?

A debit card can be a valuable learning tool, but timing is everything. Maturity level, peer pressure, and basic money skills all play an important role in deciding when to take that step.

Signs Your Child May Be Ready
Before taking the leap and opening an account, it helps to assess how your child currently handles money. Consider these questions:

  • Do they understand the difference between a debit card and a credit card?
  • Can they manage cash responsibly, such as an allowance or gift money?
  • Do they know why it’s important not to spend more than what’s in their account?
  • Are they comfortable checking balances using a mobile banking app (with your guidance)?
  • Can they follow a simple budget and set savings goals?
  • Do they recognize the difference between planned purchases and impulse buys?
  • Are you comfortable with guiding them toward responsible habits?

If you answered “yes” to most of these, your child may be ready for a checking account with a debit card.
If not, that’s okay! This is a great opportunity to start those financial conversations at home.

Turning Everyday Spending into Real-Life Lessons
A youth checking account gives kids a safe way to practice real-world money management while parents stay involved. From buying snacks after school to saving for a big purchase, children begin to see how choices affect their balance.

With your guidance, a checking account can help teach:

  • Responsible spending habits
  • Budgeting and saving skills
  • The value of planning ahead
  • How digital money works in everyday life

These lessons are especially valuable as Deer Creek students prepare for high school, college, and their first jobs.

What Parents Should Look For

Parental oversight is key when choosing a financial institution for your child. The right account should offer tools that allow you to monitor activity and set healthy boundaries.

At Communication Federal Credit Union, parents can access features like spending alerts, transaction limits, and the ability to temporarily block a debit card if it’s lost or misplaced. Accounts can also be structured so parents can view their child’s activity without giving children access to the parents’ accounts.

Security education is another important part of the process. Helping kids understand how to protect their debit card, recognize scams, and use online banking safely builds confidence and awareness.

Helping Deer Creek Kids Build Financial Confidence

There’s no single “right age” for a debit card. Every child is different. What matters most is readiness and parental involvement. When introduced at the right time, a student checking account with a Visa debit card can be a strong step toward financial independence.

Since 1939, Communication Federal Credit Union has partnered with Oklahoma families to provide accounts designed to for families to grow with children. With the right tools and guidance, Deer Creek parents can help their kids build smart financial habits that last a lifetime.
