As summer approaches kids and families will be flocking to swimming pools. It is always prudent to go over and reinforce safety measures and protocols before your child gets in the pool.
Florida has the highest number of pools per household, approximately one pool for every 14 residents. It is extremely important for families to follow some rules for pool safety for kids.
1. Active adult supervision without any distractions
Make sure an adult who knows how to swim (Water watcher) watches the kids actively while they are in the pool (no phones or books).
For young children the adult should be within touching distance (inside the pool).
2. Pool fences and alarms
The pool should be surrounded by at least 4 feet tall fence with a door with a latch that remains locked at all times when no one is using the pool. Also use pool alarms and door alarms when someone enters the water.
3. Drain covers
Make sure all drains are covered to avoid entrapment.
4. No diving in water less than 9 feet deep
5. No toys inside the pool when it’s not being used
Ensure young kids are not attracted to the pool.
6. All adults supervising the pool should learn CPR
I will conclude by reminding parents and grandparents that as far as pool safety is concerned no measure is too much.
Stay safe and healthy this summer.
