As we approach the end of the cold months, we welcome the sun and warmth back with open arms. From sweaters to short sleeves, pants to shorts, cooking inside to grilling in our yards, and finally from red wines to rosés. Rosé wine is the quintessential transition to warmer months—although I am a big advocate for drinking whatever you want, whenever you want. The trends don’t lie, and I am here to guide you through that.

Rosé wine is a crisp, dry wine that gets its color from the grape skins, which occurs from how long the grape skins have sat during fermentation. This is also dependent on the grape used in the rosé process. Hence, the nice pink hue rosé has. One classic example is Le Petit Balthazaar Cinsault, a rosé that is very blush in color and has wonderful strawberry, tart cherry, and orange zest notes. Cinsault is a specific grape grown in southern France.

Rosés are not just from France. Although Côtes de Provence is the rosé capital, there is an abundance all around. Italy also produces excellent rosés, including those being made with Montepulciano grapes such as Cataldi Madonna Cerasuolo D’Abruzzo from the renowned region Abruzzi. Cerasuolo means ‘cherry red’ in Italian. Since Montepulciano is a darker, deeper, heavier grape than Cinsault, this rosé is going to be deeper in color as well, giving it a nice magenta look with notes of pomegranate, light citrus, and florals.

Rosés are some of the most fascinating wines. With many different styles fit for any occasion, they are an integral piece of our wine list spanning over 150 selections at Falcone’s Kitchen.
