When we were kids, and our children were young, we all lived our lives around the academic calendar. Summer was the time for vacations, summer camp and more freedom than during the school year. We counted the days until summer break began and, then as parents, sometimes counted the days until the school year started again!
Regardless, though, of our age and stage, we can regain the joy of summer. Warmer weather allows us to enjoy more time outdoors. Walking and enjoying nature are much easier without coats and hats and boots or worrying about snow and ice on the ground. For older adults, early in the day or early in the evening can be better times, when the heat of the sun is not as intense. Lacing up our sneakers and walking, even just for a few minutes, can make a positive impact on both our physical and mental health.
Summer also gives us the opportunity to beautify our surroundings. Maybe you love flowers and find joy in the colors and fragrances. If planting a flower garden is difficult, flowering plants are a great alternative. Hanging baskets are widely available as are potted plants with many varieties. If you have favorite plants and flowers your local nursery is often happy to oblige.
We can also change our eating habits in the summer. Local produce is bountiful and a trip to one of the many local farmer’s markets can be both a culinary treat and a feast for the sense. This is a great time to try a vegetable that you’ve never had before. Make a big salad with all of your favorites, add a little protein if you like, and enjoy a meal that is fresh, delicious and nutritious.
When the weather is warm, it’s time to open our windows, both physically and mentally. Let the fresh into your home to chase the winter away. And, at the same time, use this time to re-energize and renew yourself. Take some time for reflection and self-care, take some time to check in with yourself and your goals. Give yourself the break you need to feel ready and focused for the second half of the year.
