Smile Before You Go: Summer is the sweetest time to get ahead on dental care — especially if you have a college-bound kid leaving in the fall.

Summertime in Savannah highlights why we all love living here. It is the pinnacle of the year, boasting beach days, boating, and beautiful, late sunsets. It is no wonder schedules seem a little lighter and life slows down to an enjoyable speed.

In the dental world, we see a pleasant change of pace, too. Scheduling revolves less around rigid school and work hours and more around travel plans for summer vacations. This is a wonderful time of year to check off some of your dental to-dos, especially for new graduates!

For young adults heading off to college, it is a perfect time to address setting up summer/holiday six-month hygiene cleaning rotations and dental exams. Once graduates head off to their new college life, it becomes difficult to manage those types of appointments from a distance. During this transitional period of life where young adults begin to take over tasks that were previously handled by their parents, it is common to see years go by between routine dental visits.

For young adult children, summer is also an ideal time to consult with an oral surgeon regarding whether third molar extraction is the right choice. Wisdom teeth have a way of announcing themselves at the worst possible moments, and few things feel more helpless than a parent who is hours away from their college student in pain. Dental infections can come on suddenly, and while not all issues can be predicted, many dental crises can be averted with proper exams and treatment before a problem arises.

While changes in class schedules each semester can make it tempting to avoid pre-booking dental visits, having a set plan and pre-made appointments in advance can assure that no treatment schedules fall behind or get forgotten.

So enjoy the season—have fun in the sun, eat all the ice cream and popsicles, and remember to add dental planning to your summer itinerary!
