Summer is a time for outdoor fun, but a few simple precautions can help keep kids safe and healthy all season long.
Sun protection is key. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, apply 15–30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours—or after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sun hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
Hydration matters. Kids can become dehydrated quickly in the heat. Encourage frequent water breaks, especially during sports or camp. Watch for signs like fatigue, dizziness, or dark urine.
Water safety is critical. Always supervise children around pools, lakes, or oceans—no exceptions. Even strong swimmers need an adult watching them. Consider swim lessons and ensure life jackets are worn when appropriate.
Protect against bites and stings. Use insect repellent when needed and check for ticks after outdoor play, especially in wooded or grassy areas. Prompt removal of ticks reduces the risk of illness.
Helmet and gear use can prevent serious injuries. Make sure children wear helmets when biking, scootering, or skating.
Finally, keep a small summer first-aid kit on hand with bandages, antiseptic, and any necessary medications.
With a little preparation, families can focus on what summer is all about—safe, active fun outdoors.
