Summer Toys: A Policy Breakdown for Watercraft and Off-Road Vehicles

As summer and vacation season kick into full swing, many families dust off the fun stuff—boats at the lake, ATVs for the trails, and jet skis for weekend getaways. It’s an exciting time, but it’s also a smart moment to double-check your insurance so you’re protected before you hit the water or the road. A common question is whether these “summer toys” need their own policy or if they can be covered with an endorsement added to an existing home or auto policy.

In many cases, bigger or faster watercraft and personal watercraft (like jet skis) need their own dedicated coverage. A standalone watercraft policy can help cover physical damage to the vehicle, provide liability protection, and may include options for things like on-water towing, trailers, and accessories that may not be fully covered elsewhere.

For ATVs and other off-road vehicles, where and how you use them matters. If the ATV leaves your property, is taken to trails, or could cause injury or property damage, a separate policy is often the best way to secure both liability and physical damage coverage.

An endorsement can be a good fit for certain situations, typically lower-risk items, limited use, or when you need narrower coverage. Because endorsements can come with restrictions, it’s worth reviewing details.

Before your next trip, list what you own, who will operate it, where it’s used, and its value—then talk with your agent to make sure the coverage matches the adventure.
