Hooray! School’s out and it’s every Chicagoland family’s favorite season — sweet and sunny summertime! Is your family busy gearing up for day camps, sporting events, or a long weekend at the lake with grandparents? Whichever plans are on your agenda this year, I’m here to remind you that healthy habits don’t have to take a vacation during the summer months. I’m excited to share three of my favorite tips to keep your little one’s smile bright and shiny all summer long!

1. “Water whenever!” is a favorite mantra of mine. Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep your body healthy and smile shining bright! Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria that can cause cavities and bad breath. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), daily water needs depend on age, activity level, and weather. General recommendations include 1–4 cups for toddlers, 5 cups for ages 4–8, and 7–11 cups for older children and teens. Carrying reusable water bottles with colorful designs can make drinking water more fun and encourage this healthy habit throughout the day. It is important to avoid sugary sports drinks, juices, and soda because they are acidic and can weaken tooth enamel and lead to cavities over time — even if these drinks are diluted with water! Choosing water as your go-to drink keeps your teeth strong, your body energized, and your smile happy!

2. “Popsicles for dessert!” During the hot summer months, popsicles can be a fun and refreshing dessert choice. Popsicles made from water, yogurt, or real fruit can help keep kids hydrated and are a good alternative to sticky candies and sugary treats that cling to teeth. Frozen treats can also be soothing for sensitive gums, especially little ones who are teething! Another great dessert choice is plain ice cream. Like popsicles, ice cream melts away from the teeth quickly and doesn’t stay stuck in deep grooves. So this summer, reach for the popsicle or plain ice cream — not the sticky cookies — to satisfy sweet cravings while helping keep your child’s smile healthy!

3. “Avoid grazing!” Another helpful snacking tip is timing. Enjoying sweet treats with meals rather than constant snacking throughout the day to give teeth a better chance to recover from sugar exposure. After snacks, encourage children to drink water to help rinse the mouth. And of course, maintaining regular brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste remains essential all summer long— even on late nights and vacation schedules!
