As the days stretch longer and the air softens into that unmistakable Montana summer, something magical begins to happen in Whitefish.
Patios fill with laughter. Trails hum with movement. Visitors arrive, eager to experience the beauty we’re lucky enough to call home. And right alongside the sunshine and adventure, there’s something else that defines summer here: Music.
In the performing arts, we often talk about shared experience—that feeling when a room (or an outdoor space) becomes unified through a song, a rhythm, or a story. Summer amplifies that.
Unlike winter, when we gather indoors in smaller circles, summer invites us outward. It creates space for connection across generations, across backgrounds, across visitors and locals alike. Music becomes the common language.
Research has shown that live music doesn’t just entertain—it reduces stress, increases feelings of belonging, and creates lasting memory anchors. In a place like Whitefish, where community is everything, those moments matter deeply.
A few years ago, I had a vision:
What if we could bring Broadway-caliber, high-energy live music to Whitefish in a way that felt both elevated and deeply local?
That vision became the Whitefish Summer Concert Series.
What started as an idea rooted in storytelling and performance has grown into a shared tradition—one that celebrates iconic music while bringing our community together in a meaningful way. Each season, we choose artists whose music transcends generations—artists whose songs people don’t just hear… they feel.
This year, we begin with the music of Dolly Parton—and I can’t think of a more perfect way to start the season.
Dolly represents something rare in today’s world: authenticity, joy, storytelling rooted in truth, and an unwavering sense of self. Her music spans decades, but more importantly, it spans people. Whether you grew up on country radio, discovered her through film, or simply know her as a cultural icon, Dolly brings us together.
And that’s exactly what great performing arts should do.
Whitefish itself is unique. We are both a tight-knit local community and a world-class destination. That balance is what makes summer here so special—but it also presents an opportunity.
Live performance becomes a bridge.
It gives visitors a deeper connection to the town beyond its natural beauty. It gives locals a reason to gather, celebrate, and share what we love about where we live. And when done thoughtfully, it elevates the cultural identity of a place—not just as somewhere to visit, but somewhere to truly experience.
As someone who has spent a lifetime in the performing arts—from Broadway stages to concert halls—I’ve come to believe this:
People may forget what they did on a random Tuesday in July…
But they will remember the night they sang their hearts out with a room full of strangers who suddenly didn’t feel like strangers at all.
That’s the power of music.
That’s the magic of summer.
This season, I encourage you to lean into it all. Say yes to the patio dinner. Take the extra walk along the lake. Invite friends to join you for an evening out. And make space for live performance in your summer plans.
Because these are the moments that define a season—and ultimately, a life.
Here’s to a beautiful summer in Whitefish.
And if you find yourself following the music this season, you just might discover something unforgettable waiting for you there.
