This Summer? Plan to Play and… Feel Relief

You haven’t come this far just to not play and…. Feel Relief. You know that summer evening when you are sitting outside and the air temperature finally feels perfect – like there is no difference between the air and your skin? Or, the hours after you finally clean out that one drawer and suddenly the whole house feels lighter? It’s simple. It’s honest. It’s comfortable and rewarding.

That’s what a genuine estate plan does for your life. It’s not glamorous, it’s not Instagram‑worthy (not that I’ve figured out how to post there), but it is the kind of quiet real move that gives you real relief. An estate plan clears that little niggly worry that runs in the background all your other thoughts. It’s about making space for more peace, more play, and the deep relief of knowing you’ve taken good care of the people and the life you love even if a disaster occurs. Then you can get back to the good stuff—sun on your face, people you love, and fewer 3 a.m. “what if” thoughts. Instead of three steps? Let’s make even easier – let’s use just two.

Step One: Know what you have and who gets it. Make a simple list of what you own and
where it lives (accounts, real estate, insurance, retirement, and where the passwords
list is hiding). It does not have to be pretty. Decide who you truly trust to be in
charge—not out of guilt but based on who actually shows up. Notice where your
stomach tightens – that is the wrong direction. Don’t put them or that on the list. It’s just
a list that nobody needs yet – grab a notepad or scratch paper and just work on a list.

Step Two: Put the basics in writing. For most people, that means a financial and health-
care power of attorney, a will (maybe a trust), and updated beneficiary and
transfer‑on‑death designations. Homemade and internet downloaded plans are the legal
version of “I watched three YouTube videos so I can totally rewire my house.” Or, “My
mom is a lawyer, so I know how to handle my speeding ticket” (she said, not directed at
anyone in particular). Technically possible. Rarely advisable.
The flip side? When you have a plan that actually matches your real life and your real
people, there is a noticeable physical exhale. You can feel the relief in your shoulders
on the way out the door. We see it every time we hand clients their documents – we
would throw confetti because it feels that good (but confetti on carpet sucks).

If you do nothing else this summer, 1. Just call and get an appointment on the calendar
– 30 seconds from now? Your plan could be in motion. 2. Then, in the meantime on
those wonderful evenings? Make your “what I own / who’s in charge / who gets what”
list. It’s so simple, you can even do the steps in reverse. We’ll pour the coffee, talk
through the hard parts, have a good giggle about something because life is weird, and
get the plan in motion up so you can go back outside and play.

Remember – Leave a legacy you love…not just where the stuff goes, but fun you had enjoying it with those you love. Hugs!
