Dear Neighbor, thank you for taking time to check out our Local Carlsbad Neighbors Magazine.  I am your neighbor and have been a Farmers Insurance Agent for 29 years.  Saving money on insurance in California doesn’t have to mean sacrificing coverage. With rising premiums across auto, home, and health insurance, being strategic about your policies can make a significant difference in your overall costs. Here are practical tips to help California residents reduce insurance expenses while staying protected.

First, shop around and compare quotes regularly. Insurance rates can vary widely between providers, even for identical coverage. Getting at least three quotes for any policy—whether auto, homeowners, or renters—can reveal substantial savings. Don’t assume loyalty pays; many insurers offer better rates to new customers than existing ones.

Bundling policies is another effective way to cut costs. Many insurance companies provide discounts when you combine multiple policies, such as auto and home insurance. This not only simplifies billing but can also reduce premiums by 10% or more.

For auto insurance, consider adjusting your deductible. A higher deductible typically results in a lower monthly premium. Just make sure you have enough savings to cover the deductible if you need to file a claim. Additionally, take advantage of usage-based or low-mileage programs if you don’t drive often—common in urban areas or for remote workers.

Maintaining a clean driving record is crucial in California, where insurers heavily weigh driving history. Avoiding accidents and traffic violations can keep your premiums low over time. Some insurers also offer defensive driving course discounts, which are worth exploring.

Homeowners can save by improving home safety and resilience. Installing security systems, smoke detectors, and fire-resistant materials may qualify you for discounts. In wildfire-prone areas, mitigation efforts like clearing brush or upgrading roofing materials can also reduce premiums or improve insurability.

Review your coverage annually to ensure you’re not over insured. For example, you may no longer need certain riders or may be paying for coverage that exceeds your current needs. Adjusting coverage limits to better reflect your situation can lower costs without increasing risk significantly.

Take advantage of discounts. Many insurers offer savings for things like good credit, paperless billing, automatic payments, or even professional affiliations. Ask your provider for a full list of available discounts—you might be missing out on easy savings.

Finally, consider working with local Farmers Insurance Agent. They can help you compare policies withing the Farmers Family and if  the Farmers Product does not fit, they might have alternatives to offer while expert guidance can often uncover savings you wouldn’t find on your own.

By staying proactive, informed, and willing to reassess your options, you can keep your insurance costs manageable while maintaining the protection you need in California.

Kindly, Glenn P Domingo, agency owner
