Go beyond surface appeal and learn how to physically evaluate cabinetry construction for lasting quality.

Cabinetry is the structural and visual anchor of your home’s primary spaces, so you want it to be durable as much as beautiful. Every dollar counts in a home remodeling project, but balancing budgetary prudence with high-quality, lasting results can be tricky. To differentiate premium craftsmanship from a lower-tier product, you need to use your physical sense and examine cabinets up close.

Here are four practical ways to evaluate construction and find cabinets that will stand the test of time.

1. Pay attention to the fine details

High-quality cabinetry is defined by precise finishes. Run your fingers along the edges of the face frame. Are they gently softened or “radiused”? Eased edges resist chipping and splintering far better than sharp, square corners, which don’t have the adequate surface area required to hold a finish for the long term.

2. Look for structural integrity

Examine how the pieces are put together. Look for solid wood drawer-boxes with durable dovetailed joinery on all four corners, rather than staples or glue. For the cabinet box itself, ask about the materials and thickness. Opt for boxes constructed with 21-inch to 43-inch plywood or premium furniture board. Don’t overlook the moving parts either; ensure the hinges and drawer glides are soft-close styles from a reputable manufacturer.

3. Test the moving parts

Open the doors and drawers. Do the drawers feature deep sides to prevent items from tumbling out? Check the placement of the glides: bottom-mounted glides allow for full extension so you can access the entire drawer space, whereas side-mounted alternatives often limit the opening to only three-fourths of the drawer’s length. Quality doors will include adjustable screws on the hinges to ensure perfect alignment over time.

4. Inspect the finish

A premium finish should look deep and feel immaculate. Ask how many coats have been applied, as multiple layers provide a much richer appearance. Finally, touch the surfaces; a smooth, silky texture indicates the wood was thoroughly sanded in a dust-free environment before a protective topcoat was applied to prevent everyday scratches and smudges.

By keeping these quality indicators in mind, you can look past surface aesthetics and focus on choosing a reputable supplier who pairs premium materials with expert installation to ensure your investment lasts a lifetime.
