Even as Lower Salford grows with new construction, many homes that are 30 or more years old easily stand the test of time when it comes to functionality. An example of this was Mike and Tara Strand’s Harleysville home, which they bought fifteen years ago. One of the key selling points of the home was the kitchen layout, which they knew would be great for family dinners and gatherings with friends.
In recent years, however, Tara felt like the heart of her home was looking a bit dated. While their oak cabinets were solid as ever, they were dark compared to the newer kitchens she had recently visited. She was still happy with the kitchen layout, and as such, didn’t think the expense of a full renovation was necessary. She recognized that simply updating the cabinets would give her kitchen the fresh, modern look she wanted. Recalling that Sinn Painting had recently done a beautiful job on her neighbor’s exterior, Tara called them for an estimate.
A Process That Respects the Home
I visited the Strands’ home and respected their desire to keep the well-constructed cabinetry in-place while modernizing the look with fresh paint.
During the meeting,Tara talked about colors, wanting something light and in the green family. Mike wanted to make sure the transformed look would be durable and not require a lot of touch-up maintenance. I assured them that our team would meet both of their goals without too much downtime for the family kitchen.
The first step was for the Strands to meet with George, our Color Consultant. George listened to Tara’s vision for making the kitchen brighter but still warm and inviting. He helped her identify the paint color that would achieve her desired look, and we quickly got the job on our books.
When it was time for our team to get started, we met Mike, Tara and their two teenaged children before everyone headed out for the day in order to reviewe the process (so that the whole family knew what to expect).
First, we carefully removed the cabinet doors and drawers from their mounts, labeling each piece to ensure we could put everything back where it belonged when we finished. I prepared the cabinet boxes with tape and protected the rest of the kitchen by setting up a plastic barrier and ventilation scrubber for air quality. With the work area ready to go, we sanded the cabinet boxes, applied primer for a solid foundation and meticulously sprayed two coats of high-quality Sherwin Williams paint on the cabinets.
Meanwhile, the cabinet drawers and doors all headed back to our shop to be painted over the course of several days. This allowed our team to take their time with the details to ensure a flawless result. With the most labor-intensive portion of the work removed from the house, this also enabled the Strand family to get back to using their kitchen in the meantime.
Once the cabinet boxes were ready, our team took care of cleaning up our workspace. We also made sure all the dust was cleaned up and the air was clear so the Strands could breathe easily and enjoy their kitchen’s new look to the fullest.
Same Kitchen, Good as New
About a week later, I returned to reinstall the cabinet doors and drawers. With everything back in place, I had Mike and Tara look over all the work to confirm that everything was done to their expectations. Tara kept backing up to look at the full kitchen, amazed at how new it all looked. Mike kept running his hands over the finish, impressed by how natural it felt. He said that if he didn’t know better, he would have thought the cabinets were a brand-new installation!
I was packing up just as the teens got home from school with a few friends. The high schoolers were pretty impressed with the new look of the kitchen, and one even mentioned that her mom said to get my business card so she could have him take a look at updating their cabinets as well as their kitchen and dining room walls.
All in all, it was a successful job and a pleasure to work with Strands!
