Have you ever considered visiting a chiropractor?

Many people mistakenly think that chiropractors are simply doctors who treat back or neck pain “naturally”. And although many do begin their chiropractic experience because of new or chronic pain, most patients continue due to the real benefits of care.

Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by D.D. Palmer, who performed the first adjustment on a man named Harvey Lillard. Mr. Lillard had lost most of his hearing as a child after a horse had kicked him. Dr. Palmer hypothesized that there may be a nerve getting pinched, causing a reduction of flow to the ear.

After receiving an adjustment, Harvey indicated that he noticed an improvement with his hearing, and the science of chiropractic was born. D.D. Palmer and his son B.J. went on to create the first chiropractic school and began training others in the art of chiropractic.

Chiropractic means “the practical use of the hands (chiro),” and chiropractors are trained to locate and address subluxations with adjustments. Subluxations are restrictions in the spine that disrupt the flow of energy of the nervous system, resulting in symptoms.

Your nervous system comprises of your brain, spinal cord, and nerves, and to protect your spinal cord, you have 24 moveable vertebrae that allow you to bend and twist. Over time, pressure or injury can cause these vertebrae to break down or become restricted, resulting in irritation to the nerve signaling from your brain to your body or your body up to your brain.

Symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, or headaches are common because of this irritation and are why many seek chiropractic care. And the great news is, many people see amazing results quickly! As adjustments are made and the vertebrae’s position and function are properly restored, your body’s natural healing capacity takes over and provides improvements.

So, why do so many people choose to continue care even after their symptoms are gone? Simple, they understand that keeping their vertebrae properly moving will not only keep the symptoms away, but also prevent further breakdown of their spinal joints in the future.

Like it or not, your spine is getting older every day. The more you are willing to take care of it, the better you will feel as you age. Just like healthy eating and exercise will pay dividends to your future self, getting regular chiropractic adjustments will help you maintain the healthy and active lifestyle you desire.
