American Place Casino is known for its Top Workplace culture, but when asked to describe an individual who represents the casino’s award-winning attitude, one person stands out: Gary Richards.

Gary works at APC as a steward in the Food and Beverage Department. He began his F&B career in tandem with his passion for bowling at Sunset Bowl in Waukegan, Illinois.

“Ten years ago, Pete from Sunset Bowl taught me how to wash dishes, and he got me started on a good career. He prepared me to come work at APC,” said Gary. “I have to make sure to give a shoutout to Pete and Sunset Bowl for all of my current success and for teaching me everything.”

In March, the restaurant Gary works at inside the casino, L’Americain, rolled out an all-new menu. While his duties are primarily back of house, he noticed that his front-of-house team members were busy training and, without anyone asking, jumped in to assist the front-of-house team with duties such as bussing and sanitizing tables. His efforts allowed tables to be turned over more quickly, strengthening the guest experience. This also helped reduce stress for the service team so they could focus on the new menu.

“Gary is the most positive person I have ever worked with. He is a joy to have in Food and Beverage,” said Stephanie Torres, Assistant Director of F&B.

Gary’s efforts and teamwork-driven attitude resulted in him receiving the Golden Paddle Award, APC’s version of Employee of the Month. To earn this award, team members must exemplify one of three acts of service: service to guests, service to team members, or service to the community.

“Gary is a significant force in the stewarding department, and he always comes to work with a positive outlook and is quick to assist with tasks outside of his direct responsibilities,” said F&B Director John Johnson. “His actions have made the new menu rollout better and less stressful for his fellow team members while positively impacting the guest experience.”

Gary hopes to turn his Golden Paddle into a gold medal this year as he prepares to participate in his 37th Special Olympics this summer, representing Waukegan. This will be his 17th trip and his 30th appearance at the state level. His Summer Games schedule includes tennis, bowling, volleyball, and the track-and-field 400-meter walk. To prepare for his competitive events, Gary trains by walking throughout the community. By walking to the bowling alley, Gary is able to train for two of his events at the same time.

“I practice by walking through Gurnee Mills and by walking from American Place to the Bowlero bowling alley,” said Gary.

His coach, Carrie, and his assistant coach, Karen, who is also his sister, have made a big impact on his journey.

“My sister Karen, who is my backup coach, drives me everywhere, and she always cheers me on,” said Gary. “She helps me out with lots of advice.”

After winning the Golden Paddle and heading to the Special Olympics, Gary’s next goal is to continue working hard and climbing the ladder of success. He has a mantra that he repeats to himself that came from fellow coworker Kelly: “I got this.” That saying has kept him strong and reminded him that he can do anything he puts his mind to.

Gary’s parting advice is: “People can make their dreams come true by working hard to achieve what they want in life. Continue to work hard at work or in sports, and overall, just be happy!”
