There are moments in every community’s story marked not by growth, but by difficult and necessary change. For Ignite Living, this season represents one of those moments. After extensive investigation and months of evaluation, Ignite Living recently announced the upcoming closure of the apartment residences at Ignite at Palmetto Park effective July 31, 2026.

For many residents, these apartments were far more than a building. They were home. Friendships were formed over shared meals, celebrations filled the halls, and residents found comfort in a community rooted in care, connection, and faith.

This decision came only after leadership explored every possible path forward. CEO Shannon Watson and COO Sharalene Roper spent weeks meeting with engineers, contractors, lenders, consultants, and senior housing professionals in an effort to preserve both resident homes and staff positions.

During an extensive structural investigation, serious concerns were discovered within the floor joists between the first and second floors of the apartment building. Engineers determined the building would need to be completely vacant for repairs to be safely completed. Initial repair estimates exceeded $1 million.

At the same time, the apartment HVAC system was found to have experienced widespread failures due to improper installation. Leadership determined the entire system would require replacement at an estimated cost of nearly $1.8 million. Combined, projected repairs exceeded $3.5 million.

Compounding these challenges was occupancy. Portions of the building could no longer be safely occupied, leaving the apartments operating at approximately 62% occupancy while facing growing losses and rising expenses.

Ultimately, after exploring every possible solution, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to cease apartment operations while continuing efforts to identify a future owner for the property.

Throughout the transition, leadership remained focused on caring for residents and staff with dignity and compassion. Apartment residents were connected with trusted senior placement organizations to help identify future homes offering similar environments and amenities. Residents also received full security deposit refunds to assist with relocation expenses.

Although one chapter is ending, the story of Ignite at Palmetto Park is far from over.

The cottage community will remain open and continue serving residents through a vibrant, wellness-centered environment focused on meaningful living, connection, and purpose. Ignite Living also plans to expand the Palmetto Park campus through the development of additional cottages. Ignite Living’s commitment to the Eight Dimensions of Wellness and its Christian faith foundation continues to guide the organization’s mission and vision.

Seasons like this remind us of an important lesson in life and aging: sometimes circumstances are beyond our control, and the road ahead is not the one we would have chosen. Yet even in uncertain seasons, there is peace in trusting the process, leaning on our faith, and remembering that God often continues working even when we cannot yet see the full picture. Difficult chapters can still lead to renewed purpose, deeper compassion, and hope for what comes next.

What emerges from this painful season is not simply loss, but resilience, responsibility, faith, and hope.

Ignite Living made this decision not because the community lacked heart, but because leadership cared deeply enough to protect its future. The mission remains unchanged: to serve older adults with dignity, compassion, purpose, and love for years to come.
