For decades, the message to young people was simple: graduate high school, go to college, and success will follow. While college remains a great choice for many, it is no longer the only path to a rewarding career and financial stability.
Today, students and adult learners have more options than ever before. Career technical education (CTE) is opening doors to high-demand careers, allowing individuals to gain valuable skills, earn industry-recognized credentials, and enter the workforce with confidence—often without taking on years of student loan debt.
Ohio has become a national leader in career technical education, recognizing the important role skilled workers play in strengthening local communities and driving economic growth. As industries continue to evolve, employers are increasingly seeking individuals with technical expertise, workplace experience, and professional skills that allow them to contribute from day one.
At Portage Lakes Career Center, we have been helping students build successful futures since 1977. Located in Green, Ohio, our mission is to equip and empower tomorrow’s leaders to discover their passion and design their future. Through career-focused education, students gain the knowledge, hands-on experience, and confidence needed to succeed in today’s workforce.
Employers across our region continue to face a growing demand for skilled workers in healthcare, manufacturing, skilled trades, technology, and personal services. These are careers that keep our communities running and offer strong earning potential, long-term stability, and opportunities for advancement.
Through programs such as Practical Nursing, Dental Assisting, HVAC, Welding, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Hair Design, Phlebotomy Technician, and Nail Technician, students learn by doing. They train in modern labs that mirror real workplaces and learn from instructors who bring years of industry experience into the classroom every day.
One of the greatest advantages of career technical education is its return on investment. Instead of spending four or more years pursuing a degree before entering the workforce, many students can complete training in months, earn industry credentials, and begin building a career much sooner.
Career technical education also offers flexibility. Many adult education programs are available in evening or part-time formats, making it possible for students to balance family responsibilities, employment, and education while working toward their goals. With several programs that can be completed in 10 months or less, students don’t have to wait years to change their future. In less than a year, they can gain in-demand skills, earn industry credentials, and take the first step toward a rewarding new career.
Just as important, students develop more than technical skills. They learn communication, teamwork, professionalism, critical thinking, and problem-solving, qualities employers consistently rank among the most valuable in today’s workforce.
As we prepare for Fall 2026, enrollment is entering its final stages. While many programs have limited availability, seats remain in our Dental Assisting, Hair Design, and Esthetics programs. For individuals considering a career change, recent graduates exploring their options, or anyone looking to gain in-demand skills without accumulating significant student loan debt, now is an excellent time to explore the opportunities available through career technical education.
The conversation should no longer be about choosing between college and career technical education. The real question is: What pathway best prepares you for the future you want?
For many students and adult learners, the answer is clear.
Invest in skills. Not student loans.
