This June, Red Oak Villa proudly celebrated 20 years of serving seniors in Sudbury, marking an important milestone while reflecting on the rich history of the building and property that residents call home today.
The story begins in 1895, when three Sisters of the Grey Nuns of the Cross arrived from Ottawa at the request of local physicians to help care for patients in a makeshift hospital on Dufferin Street. The Catholic Church owned a large parcel of land on the north side of town, and with the strong support of the parish priest and community fundraising efforts, plans for a new hospital were set in motion.
Construction of St. Joseph’s Hospital was completed in 1898 at a cost of just over $25,000.00, making it one of the oldest institutional healthcare sites in Sudbury. In fact, some current Red Oak Villa residents were born in the very building they now proudly call home.

Red Oak Villa officially opened its doors on June 1, 2006, with 84 suites. Demand was immediate, as within three months, every suite was occupied, and a waiting list of 39 prospective residents had formed.
As the community continued to grow, plans for expansion were developed. In 2017, the property’s iconic 133-foot brick smokestack was carefully demolished. The smokestack, part of the coal-fired heating plant that once served St. Joseph’s Hospital, had been a familiar feature of Sudbury’s skyline for nearly 90 years. Its removal marked the beginning of Phase Two of Red Oak Villa’s expansion.
The project faced several challenges, including the global pandemic, supply chain shortages, and labour disruptions, extending the construction timeline to five years. However, the commitment to growth never wavered. Upon completion of Phase Two, work on Phase Three began immediately, which included the complete renovation of the original lounge, kitchen and dining room which were demolished and then converted to updated amenities.
In 2023, Phase Three was completed, bringing Red Oak Villa to its current capacity of 206 suites. The expansion also introduced a striking new five-storey tower featuring a new vestibule and lobby, fully renovated dining room, and modern chef’s kitchen, enhancing both the appearance and functionality of the community.
