Improving Patient Flow, Reducing Delays and Increasing Positive Outcomes

A major milestone in regional healthcare is arriving this month as Glens Falls Hospital, a member of the Albany Med Health System, prepares for the soft opening of its newly expanded and renovated Sheridan Emergency Department.

The project, the first significant upgrade to the hospital’s emergency department in nearly three decades, represents a substantial investment in the future of emergency care for residents throughout our area. Hospital officials have described the expansion as a critical step in meeting the growing healthcare needs of the Adirondack region and surrounding communities.

Construction has continued while the emergency department remained fully operational, ensuring uninterrupted emergency services throughout the project. The renovation and expansion are designed to create a more private, efficient, comfortable, and patient-centered experience for the more than 44,000 patients who seek emergency care at Glens Falls Hospital each year.

When fully operational, the new Sheridan Emergency Department will be approximately 40 percent larger than the existing facility and will feature modern treatment areas designed to improve patient flow and reduce delays in care. Among the planned enhancements are expanded treatment spaces for critically ill patients, additional areas for those with less severe illnesses and injuries, a larger and more welcoming waiting area, and a dedicated CT scanner within the emergency department to help physicians diagnose and treat emergency conditions more quickly.

“We provide over 100 cat scans per day” stated. Dr Robert McHugh, Medical Director and Chair of the Emergency Department. “Our goal is to see the patient as quickly as possible, identify their issues, take the proper next steps and send them home safely, when they are ready. These improvements will help us to provide faster, better care while keeping the patients and their families engaged and informed throughout their stay.”

Dr Michelle Kilmer, Dir of Patient Services says “This will allow hospital staff to begin transitioning operations into the new space while testing systems, workflows, and patient care processes before full implementation. This phased approach is designed to ensure a smooth experience for patients and caregivers alike as the expanded department begins serving the community.”

Dr Richard Sposito, Emergency Department Nurse Manager added” These changes will also give us more room so we can add more doctors, nurses and PA’s so as to improve the thruput and effectiveness of service for both the patients and the staff.”

The project has been made possible through a combination of hospital investment, community support, and philanthropic giving. The David S. and Janet R. Sheridan Foundation provided a lead gift of $3 million, continuing a long-standing commitment to emergency services at the hospital. Additional major contributions from regional foundations and community donors have helped fuel what has become the largest fundraising campaign in Glens Falls Hospital’s history.

For residents of the North Country and Adirondacks, the upgraded Sheridan Emergency Department represents far more than a construction project. It is an investment in timely access to emergency care close to home. As one of the region’s busiest healthcare entry points and often the first destination for patients experiencing serious illness, injury, or trauma, the department plays a vital role in the health and safety of thousands of families each year.

With its June soft opening marking the beginning of a new chapter, Glens Falls Hospital is positioning itself to meet the region’s emergency healthcare needs for decades to come, delivering enhanced care in a modern facility designed around the needs of patients, families, and healthcare professionals alike.
