One of my favourite things to remind customers is that almost every ingredient we truly want to put on our skin begins as a plant. Here in the Okanagan, we’re fortunate to enjoy a long growing season and an abundance of beautiful herbs, flowers and wild plants that can nourish and support healthy skin.
I love sharing simple recipes like these because they empower people to reconnect with the healing power of nature. Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive or filled with hard-to-pronounce ingredients. In fact, freshly harvested botanicals can often provide benefits that rival products found on store shelves.
Rose & Lavender Face & Body Mist – For radiant, refreshed and beautifully hydrated skin
Few skincare rituals feel as luxurious as a cooling rose mist. Rose petals help tone, soothe and protect the skin with their natural antioxidant properties, while lavender calms irritation and supports healing.
Loosely fill a small jar with fresh rose petals and lavender blooms, then cover with freshly boiled water. Allow to steep for 15 minutes before straining and cooling in the refrigerator. Transfer to a clean mister bottle and enjoy throughout the day. Store in the refrigerator and use within three days.
This recipe is wonderfully adaptable. Experiment with mint, lemon balm, chamomile, nettle, raspberry leaf—or create your own unique blend from whatever is flourishing in your garden.
Mint & Cucumber Cooling Foot Soak – A refreshing remedy for hot, tired feet
When summer temperatures rise, a cooling foot soak can feel like pure bliss. Cucumbers are deeply hydrating and naturally cooling, while fresh mint invigorates and refreshes.
Fill a large jar with generous handfuls of fresh mint. Add 1 cup of Epsom salts and enough freshly boiled water to dissolve them. Allow the mint to steep as the water cools, then strain. Pour into a foot bath and add plenty of cucumber slices. For an extra-cooling spa experience, blend the cucumber before adding it to the water.
Perfect after a long day in the garden, on the trails, or simply whenever your feet need a little love.
Rosemary & Horsetail Hair Rinse – For stronger, shinier, healthier-looking hair
Summer sun, swimming and dry weather can leave hair looking dull and stressed. This traditional herbal rinse helps restore shine while supporting healthy hair growth.
Rosemary is well known for stimulating the scalp and enhancing shine, while horsetail is naturally rich in silica, a mineral prized for strengthening hair.
Fill a jar with freshly picked rosemary and horsetail, cover with freshly boiled water, and allow to steep until completely cool. Strain and pour generously over clean hair and scalp after washing. There’s no need to rinse it out.
Stored in the refrigerator, this rinse will stay fresh for three to four days.
A Gentle Reminder About Foraging:
If you’re gathering plants from the wild, always harvest responsibly. Only pick where permitted, take no more than you need, and leave plenty behind for pollinators, wildlife and future growth. Choose locations well away from roadsides and areas that may have been sprayed with herbicides or pesticides.
And above all, enjoy the process. There is something deeply satisfying about creating simple, effective skincare from plants you’ve grown or gathered yourself. It’s a beautiful reminder that some of nature’s most powerful remedies are often right outside our door.
