Skippy Runs Daycare From Shoulder Height: Meet the Daschund Who Went From Shy Spectator to Full-Time Zoomie Participant

Some dogs burst into daycare with an air of confidence, as if they own the place. But then there’s Skippy, who takes a much different approach.

Skippy, a dachshund with a personality much larger than his little legs would suggest, has become somewhat of a local celebrity thanks to his hilarious habit of riding around on human shoulders like a tiny king surveying his kingdom.

To understand Skippy now, though, you have to understand how he started.

When he first began attending daycare at BARK, Skippy was quite shy. The excitement of a yard full of friends was a little overwhelming for him, and he was not entirely convinced that he wanted any part in their shenanigans. While the other dogs chased tennis balls and wrestled in the yard, Skippy preferred to keep his distance and carefully observe the action from somewhere a little less intimidating.

That “somewhere” turned out to be people’s shoulders.

At first, the shoulder perching happened almost by accident. If a staff member picked him up, Skippy would slowly maneuver himself upward until he was comfortably draped across their shoulders like a scarf with opinions. From that elevated position, he could watch the other dogs without feeling pressured to join in. Safely above the crowd, he seemed far more relaxed.

Before long, it became his signature move. Staff members would walk through the yard with Skippy perched proudly on their shoulders while he calmly monitored daycare activities below. Other pups would be sprinting laps around the yard while Skippy sat overhead like a lifeguard supervising a busy pool. Naturally, his quirky behavior earned him plenty of attention. Dogs have all kinds of funny habits, but there is something especially entertaining about seeing a dachshund, a breed famously built low to the ground, insisting on traveling at human shoulder height instead.

Of course, Skippy’s story did not stop there. Over time, his confidence grew. The nervous little dog who once preferred to spectate from above started venturing into the yard more often. First came cautious interactions, then short bursts of play, and eventually full-on zoomies with the other dogs.

These days, Skippy can usually be found happily running around with his daycare friends or sticking close beside his favorite humans in the yard. But even though he has become far more social, he has never completely abandoned his famous perch. Now and then, he still decides the best place to be is riding shoulder-level above the action, to keep an eye on everything. And honestly, everyone seems to prefer it that way.

Skippy’s charm comes from being entirely himself. He is goofy, particular, a little dramatic, and completely unforgettable; all qualities that dachshund owners know and love well.

For those lucky enough to know him, Skippy is proof that confidence can come in many forms. Sometimes it arrives loudly and fearlessly. Other times, it arrives slowly, one shoulder ride at a time.
