Summer has arrived, and we have a lot of hot months ahead. Your air conditioner is an important part of enjoying the summer when the weather gets a bit too hot and it’s time to stay indoors to beat the heat.

Having your HVAC system checked by an expert is the place to start. A skilled technician can inspect your system for problems and help avoid system breakdowns and emergency calls.

There are some things you can do before the inspection. Flip the circuit breaker for your air conditioner to shut off the power. This prevents the system from suddenly turning on.

Removing debris, such as leaves and twigs, from your air conditioning unit is a good start. If there is dirt on the coils use a garden hose to rinse it off. Don’t use a power washer or a nozzle as they can damage the coils. Make sure the coils are completely dry before you turn everything back on.

It’s also good to check the pipe insulation. The insulation helps your air conditioner perform more efficiently, and protects the cool tubing.

If your air conditioning unit is in the sun, you might want to consider some plants that will give it some shade and help it function more efficiently.

Checking the air filter inside your house every three months allows you to see if it’s dirty. If it is, you can replace it in a timely manner, keeping your interior airflow clean and unrestricted.

After you flip your circuit breaker back to the on position, it’s time to check the fan and the cooling. Make sure your fan is running smoothly and isn’t making any odd noises. Set your thermostat to the cooling position and see if you have cooler air coming through the vents.
