Summer Car Care Tips: Don’t Road-Trip Without Checking These Essentials

Summer is road trip season, and nothing can ruin a vacation faster than a breakdown hundreds of miles from home. Before you load up the family and hit the highway, take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey.

Start with your tires. Tire pressure should always be checked when the tires are cold, and the correct pressure can be found on the driver’s door placard. Proper tire inflation improves fuel economy, handling, and tire life.

Next, inspect your cooling system. Check the coolant level and look over the radiator hoses for cracks, swelling, or leaks. Summer heat puts extra stress on your engine, and a cooling system failure can quickly leave you stranded.

Don’t overlook your wiper blades. Summer thunderstorms can dump a tremendous amount of rain in a short time. Worn blades can reduce visibility when you need it most.

Your battery deserves attention as well. Look for corrosion on the terminals and make sure the connections are clean and tight. Heat can be just as hard on batteries as cold winter temperatures.

If your air conditioning isn’t keeping you cool, resist the temptation to recharge it with a small can from the auto parts store. Modern A/C systems are complex, and improper charging can lead to expensive repairs. Have the system professionally inspected instead.

Planning to travel through mountainous areas? Have your brakes checked before your trip and familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s engine braking features. Proper use of engine braking can reduce brake wear and improve safety on long downhill grades.

A clean engine air filter can also help your vehicle run efficiently and may improve fuel economy.

Finally, consider scheduling a professional pre-trip inspection. Many shops, including Muskegon Brake & Tire, will perform a low-cost or complimentary pre-trip inspection. Catching small problems before they become major repairs can save time, money, and stress—allowing you to focus on enjoying your summer adventure.
